Inarticulate ramblings of a management consultant

the day to day experiences of a consultant operating in weird and wonderful client situations

Why do we let people who are fantastic at attracting votes run complex financially driven ‘corporations’?

As the referendum for Scottish independence draws closer, the crass opportunism and incompetence of those who are supposedly in charge of our economies becomes more and more apparent. I’m drawn to an analogy in the corporate world…would we let someone trained in the dark arts of public relations take the role of a CEO / CFO / COO? Would we let someone who was an excellent after dinner speaker take control of the treasury function?

Churchill’s comment about democracy has an unfortunate side effect like many quotes of it’s nature. It leads to a weary shake of the head and a reinforcement that there is nothing we can do…but there must be a better solution to the issue. Just as the independence of a central bank has become a normal state of affairs with the appointment of an apolitical, experienced professional with some clear guidance and performance matrices, so surely should the role of anyone in government with a serious financial management responsibility be given to someone who’s actually got some experience and competence in the matter. I know we all love to hate ‘technocrats’ primarily for their unelectable nature but their ability to do a professional job has got to be an improvement.

  1. I think that it is the career politicians that one should have more of a problem with than the technocrats appointed to run professional, apolitical government owned institutions.
